Within the framework of IMDEA Energy’s commitment to the effective transfer of R&D results to the productive sector, ABG Intellectual Property recently collaborated in the delivery of a theoretical-practical workshop to more than a hundred researchers on their staff.

In particular, our co-director, Juan Arias, travelled to this institution’s auditorium with our technical advisor and European Patent Attorney, Virginia Gómez, and the head of our legal and litigation department, Laura Montoya. Félix Marín, Responsible for Development and Transfer of Technology at IMDEA Energy, acted as the event’s organiser and speaker, alongside Jesús Palma, a researcher at the centre with whom ABG IP frequently collaborates.

Patent applications in practice

The day was exceptionally comprehensive, including both a theoretical and practical component. Our team members gave an introduction to the system for protecting industrial and intellectual property during the theoretical part, which served as a basis for further exploration of other, more specific concepts related to patent protection. Furthermore, there was time within the talks to examine the methods for obtaining benefit of the protected inventions and to review the many kinds of contracts that are frequently required in the projects of a research centre like IMDEA Energy.

The attendees, on the other hand, were able to put their newly gained knowledge into practise by applying it to a variety of research project situations. Together with our patent attorneys, the researchers worked in teams to draft the claims of a patent application. They shared their outcomes with the other attendees at the conclusion of the programme surprising them with the quality of these.

The IMDEA Energy Institute was created by the regional Government of ‘Comunidad de Madrid’ with the aim of promoting energy-related R&D activities that contribute to addressing global challenges in energy sustainability. IMDEA Energy currently employs 150 people and receives more than 7 million euros in external funding each year.

We at ABG IP are pleased to have been able to contribute to their commitment to effective transfer of R&D results to the productive sector through this training.
