On 10th October, ABG Intellectual Property organized the second IP Perspectives Euskadi Seminar in Bilbao. The conference provided information of interest on different aspects related to intellectual property, ranging from the adoption of appropriate measures to protect innovation to its management in a company or research center.
Several dozen representatives from innovation departments attended the meeting. They came from public and private companies in different sectors such as engineering, chemistry or biology, among others.
Iain McGeoch, Patent Adviser at ABG IP and head of the firm’s office in Bilbao, was in charge of conducting a day filled with content of high theoretical and practical value.
The importance of proper prosecution and how to do it
In her welcome speech, Almudena Fernández, partner at ABG IP, referred to the important innovative business existing in Euskadi and the need for responsible management of results obtained and to adequately protect inventions developed in companies, as well as in technology centers and universities.
José Miguel Lissén, head of the Legal and Litigation in ABG IP, addressed several legal aspects to take into account in order to obtain safer patents. The firm’s partner also made a number of recommendations when it comes to preparing and filing a patent application.
Fernando Prieto, also a partner at ABG IP and in charge of the areas of Engineering and Physics and Information and Communication Technology, explained some peculiarities related to protection by Industrial Design, as well as the relationship thereof with patents and how both forms of protection can complement each other.
Intellectual Property management in public and private companies
This second edition of the IP Perspectives Euskadi Seminar also involved experts in the management of intellectual property at public and private institutions.
Irene Rodríguez, a member of the Corporate Legal Services at BBVA, talked about the complexity of managing industrial property within a multinational company and commented on the creation of a Global Patent Office within the company where all activities in this area are centralized.
Gorka Artola and Ricardo Merino, meanwhile, placed a special emphasis on technology transfer and its importance at a University for both prestige and economic return issues. The members of the Innovation and Transfer Direction of the University of the Basque Country also reviewed the activities they carry out in the Innovation Area.
On a similar note, Donatello Castellana from the CIC bioGUNE Research Center outlined the activities that the research center carries out in order to license developments carried out by research groups to third parties. He also underlined the importance of raising awareness among researchers to address their laboratory work from a more practical point of view which is oriented to the needs of society.
Upcoming editions
In addition to attending the different conferences, scientists, engineers and lawyers had the opportunity to seek specific advice from ABG Intellectual Property experts on both the topics covered in the different presentations as well as on other issues of interest.
The next edition of the IP Perspectives Euskadi Seminar will be held in 2020.
