Frédéric Ratel, a European Patent Attorney and holder of a PhD in Chemistry, conducted the initial session out of four focused on the protection of inventions through intellectual property rights planned within the framework of the INNOPAU incubator created by the Institut de Recerca Sant Pau. This initiative aims to consolidate innovative ideas from the Campus Salut Sant Pau to establish a roadmap and achieve their effective transfer to the health ecosystem.
This session was held at the Barcelona Health Hub facilities, located in the Sant Pau Complex, a modernist jewel declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. The presentation was aimed at the participants of the INNOPAU incubator -whose second edition began in 2024-, together with other researchers from the Institut de Recerca Sant Pau.
Specifically, throughout the presentation, our colleague in the Chemistry and Materials and Pharmacy departments of our office in Barcelona, shared an introduction to the different figures of protection of intangible assets, beginning with the distinctions between intellectual property rights (patents, trademarks, designs, etc.). He next focused his dissertation on the legal protection of inventions, concentrating on the necessary requirements to obtain the grant of a patent.
Following this session, various ABG team members gave specialised presentations from various technological domains. In particular, Frédéric Ratel himself gave a new presentation on the specifics of patents for pharmaceutical products and medicines; Diana Mariné, an engineer, European Patent Attorney, and Spanish Patent & Trademarks Agent, spoke on the patentability of medical devices; and Pablo Calvo, our partner in the fields of engineering, physics, and ICT, European Patent Attorney, and PhD in Industrial Engineering, described the available options and the best times to patent software inventions.
The training is an element of the Institut de Recerca Sant Pau’s dedication to fostering an innovative culture. We at ABG Intellectual Property support this initiative and are appreciative of the Institut de Recerca Sant Pau’s trust in our team and in us to educate its researchers on intellectual property, a subject that we believe will greatly help these scientists bring their ideas from the lab to the market.
