Hélio joined ABG in 2021 and is a patent adviser in the Biotechnology & Life Sciences Department. His practice is focused on patent prosecution and opinion work in the area of biotechnology, particularly in relation to molecular biology, pharmacogenomics, gene therapy, immunology, animal models, and diagnostic methods.

Before he started at ABG, Hélio was a post-doctoral researcher at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, an Oxford University’s department, (2010-2017), studying the regulation and structure of the cilia and their roles in ciliopathy diseases .

He did his doctoral thesis work at the Cell Biology & Biophysics department of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the Heidelberg University (Germany).

Hélio has also published papers in peer-reviewed journals (PLoS Genetics, eLife, etc.) and presented his work at international scientific meetings.

He has completed the Course in European Patent Law, organized by the Center for International Studies on Intellectual Property (CEIPI) of the University of Strasbourg.

He is a native Portuguese speaker and is fluent in Spanish and English.
