We have received the highest honour (gold) in the area “patent prosecution” and bronze in the field of “litigation” in the IAM Patent 1000 ranking 2023 elaborated by the magazine Intellectual Asset Management (IAM).

“ABG Intellectual Property Law is an amazing set with highly skilled professionals, who have broad expertise on patent procedures, outstanding technical backgrounds and an in-depth understanding of business. Practitioners excel at managing portfolios, planning effective prosecution strategies, and conducting deep analyses. They master the intricacies of the matter at hand and have a remarkable commitment to quality.”

To compile their list, the publication conducts a rigorous study in which thousands of interviews are carried out over the course of several months with professionals in the industrial property sector, both in private practice and in-house.

Our six partners and two associates distinguished as “Recommended individuals”

In this edition there are eight members of our team who have been distinguished: all our partners and the head of our legal department, Laura Montoya, repeat their appearance, and the head of our office in the Basque Country, Iain McGeoch, is a newcomer.

The publication cites some of the comments on them that have been collected during the preparation of this report:

Co-founder Juan Arias is appreciated for his “strategic thinking, excellent communication skills and ability to build patent portfolios while maintaining protection of complex patent families across the globe. He keeps the customer’s best interests in mind, provides swift advice in critical situations, and is always professional, but with a personal touch. When it comes to securing patent protection in different jurisdictions, Juan and his squad always find a way”.

“Enric is dedicated to his patrons and is always available for a call to answer any query or doubt – it is like having an in-house attorney. He is diligent, proactive and anticipates risk. This means that he provides great advice, strategies and successful mitigation plans.”

Pablo is deeply knowledgeable about the law and engineering and articulates technical concepts clearly. He has sharp analytical skills and is quick to answer complex problems.”

Fernando is very experienced and a clear communicator – he can explain complex ideas to the court in a straightforward way. Further, he is client-oriented, accessible, and crafts smart, tactical solutions to solve complex problems.”

Iain is a key part of successful asset protection strategy. He always makes himself available and applies his high level of experience and knowledge to achieve the best patent protection possible. Iain and the set at ABG are first class.”

Almudena Fernández utilises her deep technical knowledge to craft forward-thinking filing strategies. She has recently teamed up with McGeoch and Calvo to dispense sage counsel to Universidad de Navarra regarding the IP strategy of its entire portfolio.

A biotechnology and life sciences ace, Agustín Alconada is quick to get to grips with the technical aspects and leverages his experience as an examiner at the EPO to effectively protect the inventions of his service users while avoiding disputes.

Laura Montoya is a sophisticated and poised advocate, who represents her patrons’ interests to the hilt. She has recently been representing Dana Farber Cancer Institute – an affiliate of Harvard Medical School – in four court appeal proceedings before the contentious-administrative chamber of the Madrid High Court. Montoya is set to appeal three outcomes from this dispute before the Supreme Court.
